Quick answer

Indian mattresses are sized in inches, length first: single 72 × 30, double 75 × 48, queen 75 × 60 and king 75 × 72. Lengths from 72 to 78 inches are all common, so measure the inside of your cot before buying. A 6 inch mattress is a common everyday choice for adults, while 5 inch suits children and guest beds.

Mattress sizes in India are usually quoted in inches, length first: a 75 × 60 mattress is 75 inches long and 60 inches wide. The names single, double, queen and king are widely used, but the exact measurements vary between brands and carpenters, so the safest approach is to measure your cot first and choose the mattress to match.

This guide explains the four sizes in our range, which thickness suits whom, how to match a mattress to a cot with or without storage, and how to measure your room before you buy.

Standard mattress sizes

Size Inches (L × W) Feet (approx.) Centimetres (approx.) Best for
Single 72 × 30 6 × 2.5 183 × 76 One sleeper, children, guest beds
Double 75 × 48 6.25 × 4 191 × 122 One adult, or a couple in a small room
Queen 75 × 60 6.25 × 5 191 × 152 Most couples
King 75 × 72 6.25 × 6 191 × 183 Couples sharing with a young child, larger rooms

A few points help when comparing:

  • Length varies. Lengths of 72, 75 and 78 inches are all common in India, so a queen from one source may not fit a queen cot from another. If anyone in the family is close to six feet tall, a 75-inch length gives more room than 72.
  • Width per person. A 48-inch double gives each of two adults about 24 inches, which some couples find comfortable and others find snug. A 60-inch queen gives about 30 inches each.
  • Diwans and guest beds. For a diwan cum bed or a guest bed, measure the sleeping area and match the mattress to it, just as you would for a cot.

Choosing a thickness: 5, 6 or 8 inch

Our mattresses, from Centuary and Maxy, come in 5, 6 and 8 inch thicknesses in all four sizes.

  • 5 inch: lighter and easier to lift, turn and move. It suits children's beds, guest beds, diwans and beds that are moved often.
  • 6 inch: a common everyday thickness for adults, balancing comfort with a manageable weight.
  • 8 inch: leaves room for more comfort layers and suits adults who want a plusher feel. It is heavier, raises the bed height and needs deeper bedsheets.

Thickness alone does not decide comfort. What a mattress is made of and how firm it feels matter more, so ask what each one is made of and compare how firm they feel. If you have back or joint trouble, ask your doctor what firmness suits you.

Matching a mattress to your cot

  1. Measure the inside of the frame, where the mattress actually rests, not the cot's outer size. Check the length and width at a couple of points.
  2. Match the mattress to that inner size. It should sit flat and snug: a mattress that is too big bows up at the edges, and one that is too small slides around and leaves gaps.
  3. Check the finished height. Add the mattress thickness to the height of the cot base to see how high you will sit. Older family members often find a moderate height easiest to get in and out of.
  4. Look at the side rails. On cots with raised edges, a thin mattress can sit below the rail and a thick one well above it.

Our wooden cots come in double, queen and king sizes, listed as 75 × 48, 75 × 60 and 75 × 72 inches, with or without storage.

Cots with storage

  • If the storage opens by lifting the base panels, a lighter 5 or 6 inch mattress is easier to lift each time.
  • A closed box under the mattress means less air flows underneath, so air the mattress now and then, especially in humid weather.

Cots without storage

  • An open base lets air move freely and makes the floor easier to clean.
  • The space underneath can hold trunks or suitcases, as long as some room is left for air.

Measuring your room

  1. Measure the room wall to wall and note doors, windows, switchboards and the swing of cupboard doors.
  2. Ask for the cot's outer dimensions. The frame is larger than the mattress it holds.
  3. Mark the cot's footprint on the floor with tape or newspaper to see how much space is left.
  4. Leave walking space on the sides you use; around two feet is a common rule of thumb. Make sure wardrobe doors and drawers can still open fully.
  5. Measure doorways, staircase turns and any lift on the way, so the cot and mattress can reach the room.

Looking after a new mattress

  • Let it breathe. Remove the plastic wrapping and let a new mattress air for a few hours; any new-product smell usually fades with airing.
  • Use a protector. A mattress protector or a thick under-sheet keeps sweat and spills off the surface.
  • Rotate it. Turning it head to foot every few months helps it wear evenly. Flip it over only if the maker says it is double-sided.
  • Don't fold or bend it unless the maker says it can take that, and keep it off damp floors.
  • Follow the care label. Where the brand provides care instructions, those come first.

Questions

People also ask

What is the size of a queen size mattress in India?

A queen size mattress in India is commonly 75 × 60 inches, or about 6.25 × 5 feet. Some brands and carpenters also use queen lengths of 72 or 78 inches, so measure the inside of your cot frame before you buy rather than going by the size name alone.

Is a 6 inch mattress thick enough for adults?

For many adults, yes. A 6 inch mattress is a common everyday choice that balances comfort and weight. Thickness alone does not decide comfort, though; the material and firmness matter more. Choose 5 inch for children and guest beds, and consider 8 inch if you want extra comfort layers.

What is the difference between a double and a queen bed?

The difference is width. In our range a double mattress is 75 × 48 inches and a queen is 75 × 60 inches, so the queen is a foot wider. A double suits one adult or a couple in a small room, while a queen gives two adults about 30 inches of width each.
