Electric Rice Cooker
Rice is cooked every day in most South Indian homes, and an electric rice cooker takes the guesswork out of it. Add rice and water, switch it on, and it cooks without anyone watching the stove, leaving you free to get on with the sambar, rasam or curry. It is equally handy for pongal, plain rice for lemon rice or pulihora, and a simple pulao.
Five capacities are available, 0.6 L (300 g), 1 L (0.5 kg), 1.8 L (1 kg), 2.2 L (1.25 kg) and 2.8 L (1.5 kg), with an Aluminium bowl or Stainless steel bowl, in Single bowl or Double bowl versions. Which rice cooker capacity suits my family?
Go by how much rice you usually cook at a time; the weight shown beside each capacity, such as 1.8 L (1 kg), is a helpful guide. The 0.6 L and 1 L sizes suit one or two people, 1.8 L suits many families, and 2.2 L or 2.8 L suit large households.
Should I choose an aluminium or a stainless steel bowl?
Both cook rice well, so the choice comes down to preference. Aluminium bowls are light and heat quickly, while many families prefer cooking in stainless steel and find it sturdier for daily use. Availability varies by brand and model, so ask us what is in stock.
