About this piece
Marble Mortar & Pestle
Few kitchen tools are as simple or as useful as a marble mortar and pestle. It crushes a few cardamom pods for tea, pounds ginger and garlic for a tadka, and bruises tulsi or curry leaves in seconds, with no plug or jar to wash. The weight of the stone keeps it steady on the counter, and the smooth surface is easy to wipe clean after small batches of fresh masala.
Choose Small for a pinch of spices, Medium for daily kitchen use, or Big for pounding larger quantities such as ginger-garlic paste. Because marble reacts with strong acids, it suits dry spices and fresh herbs better than lemon- or tamarind-heavy mixes. It also makes a welcome gift for anyone setting up a kitchen. It is displayed next to our soapstone mortars in the Sullurupeta showroom, so you can compare the two in person.
Highlights
- Marble mortar and pestle for spices, herbs, ginger and garlic
- Small, Medium and Big sizes
- Heavy stone base stays steady while pounding
Care & use
- Rinse soon after crushing lemon, tamarind or tomato, as acids can etch and dull marble.
- Wash with mild soap and water, avoid soaking, and let it dry fully before storing.
- Turmeric and saffron can stain light marble, so rinse promptly after using them.

Questions
Before you buy
Still unsure about a size or finish? Ask us on WhatsApp — a photo of your stove or shelf helps.
What is the difference between a marble and a soapstone mortar and pestle?
Marble is smoother and lighter in colour and suits dry spices and herbs, but strong acids can etch it. Soapstone is darker, softer to the touch and does not react with sour ingredients, so it handles tamarind or lemon-based pastes better. We stock both.
Which size marble mortar should I choose?
Pick by the quantity you usually crush. Small suits a few cardamom pods or peppercorns, Medium suits daily tadka ingredients, and Big suits larger batches such as ginger-garlic paste. We can show all three at the showroom so you can feel the weight.
